A Decade Inside Our Schools. Ready to Fight for Every Student

I'm Darlene Morrison, and I'm running to be your Newmarket school trustee.

I didn't just grow up around education - I've spent more than ten years doing the work inside our schools. School councils. Classrooms. Fundraisers. School events. As a parent of four children who completed their education in York Region schools, I've volunteered alongside teachers and staff, and I've listened to parents who just want their kids to get the support they deserve.

    What a trustee actually does

A trustee doesn't teach the lesson or write the curriculum. But a trustee decides what the board prioritizes, where the money goes, and whether the Director of Education is delivering results.

**I can't teach the lesson - but I can influence the budget, the priorities, and the accountability.**

    Why this matters

    - Only **52% of Grade 6 students** are meeting the provincial math standard. (EQAO 2025–26)

    - **63% of elementary principals** have had to ask parents to keep a child with special needs home for the day. (People for Education 2023–24)

    - **42% of elementary schools** face educational assistant shortages *every single day.* (People for Education 2023–24)

Our kids deserve better- and our educators deserve the support to deliver it.

    My commitments

**Student Achievement.** Make math a formal board priority with measurable targets.

**Student Well-Being & Mental Health.** Strengthen the supports that help students feel safe, valued, connected, and ready to learn.

**Special Education, properly staffed.** Treat special-education staffing as a core budget priority, not an afterthought. Advocate to the province for funding that matches real student needs.

**Parent & Community Voice.** Keep listening the way I've campaigned- school visits, community conversations, open communication-  and carry what I hear to the board table.

Vote Darlene Morrison — October 17–26

    About Darlene Morrison

    Serving The Community

    Hi, my name is Darlene!

I have been a resident of York Region for over 21 years, and have lived in the Summerhill North subdivision of Newmarket for the past 17 years. I am your neighbour, a member of your community, and a parent who wants children to be happy and successful everyday.

I am a parent of four children who completed their education in York Region schools; one son and three daughters. I live in Ward 6 of Newmarket, and my children all attended Clearmeadow Public School, three attended Sir William Mulock Highschool, and one attended the Arts program at Huron Heights. I understand the importance of strong schools, supportive learning environments, and engaged families.

My background in communications and advocacy has given me valuable experience listening to people, connecting communities with important information and advocating for meaningful change. Through my work with CHATS-Community & Home Assistance to Seniors, I have seen firsthand how much compassion, understanding and a strong voice can make a difference. I care deeply about people of all ages and believe every member of our community mattters- seniors, children, parents, families, educators, all school staff, and the people who support them. As a trustee, I will bring that same caring and compassionate approach to listening to students, families and educators, advocating for their needs and ensuring their voices are heard.

Over the years, I have been actively involved in school communities through parent councils, serving in roles including Co-Chair, Fundraising Lead, Volunteer Coordinator, Event Organizer, and General Member. These experiences have given me firsthand knowledge into the opportunities and challenges facing students, families, and educators. As a mother, I advocated for my children when they needed it. I was their voice. I will be the voice for your children too.

I am passionate about making a positive difference and advocating for students and families in Newmarket. I have been involved in the Newmarket community volunteering and working with non-profit organizations, and represented Newmarket as a Community Positivity Ambassador during the pandemic. Newmarket is a great place to live, and I want to give back to the amazing people who live and raise their families here. We are a community and it takes a village to make  change. By working together, we can accomplish much.

I look forward to listening to our community, working collaboratively, and helping ensure every student has the support and opportunities they need to succeed.I look forward to meeting you at your door in the next few months.

I am excited for the journey ahead and would be grateful for your support. The work is just beginning.

A Voice for Students. A Partner for Families.

Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed, reach their full potential, and feel supported throughout their educational journey. As a parent of four children who completed their education in York Region schools, I understand the importance of strong schools, engaged families, and dedicated educators.

My priorities are focused on four important areas:

    Student Achievement

I believe every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. Every child learns differently, and we need to ensure students have the supports, resources, and encouragement they need to reach their goals.

Student Well-Being & Mental Health Supports

I believe students learn best when they feel safe, valued, and supported. Mental health and well-being are essential parts of student success, and I believe our schools must continue strengthening supports that help students feel connected, confident, and ready to learn.

    Parent & Community Voice

Families are important partners in education. I believe in listening, communicating, and working together with parents, students, educators, and our community to help strengthen our schools.

Listening, Showing Up & Following Through

I believe leadership begins with listening.

As your School Trustee, I will be committed to being present in our schools and community, listening to the experiences and ideas of students, families, educators, and community members, and following through by advocating for their voices at the Board table. I believe trust is built through open communication, collaboration, and a genuine commitment to serving our community with integrity and respect.

As your School Trustee, I will work hard to advocate for students and ensure their voices are heard. I believe every child deserves a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where they can thrive both academically and personally.

I will work collaboratively with parents, students, educators, and the community to support student well-being, strengthen academic excellence, and ensure families have a strong voice in decisions that impact their schools.

My commitment is to put students first and help create opportunities for every child to succeed.
